That being said, I feel like this BL is nothing like the others. The way they acknowledge how Sa-yan's behavior isn't normal and how Illic's love isn't like any romantic or platonic love (I would argue it is more attachment than love) because he didn't forgive Sa-yan for what he did (imo, to love is to forgive — to love without forgiving would just hurt yourself — but different people, different opinions)
That being said, we as a reader still can feel how attached Illic is to Sa-yan despite their unconvenience (? I'm not sure if that's the word, eng isn't my first language) love.
Sa-yan, for most of his manic personality, actually possessed unconditional love. He can think of ways to hurt Illic all he wants, fantasies about it even, but when the opportunity comes, Illic himself said that Sa-yan tried his best to not actually physically harm him. Illic can run, hit, and curse Sa-yan all he wants, Sa-yan would never stop loving him even if that love is obsessive, insane, and toxic.
"Obsession isn't love" true, and thus they can exist together. That's what Sa-yan's love is. Unlike others ML (Caesar from R&C, for instance) I cannot see or feel their love as a reader for their harmful ways extends to OUTSIDE of the bedroom/intimacy. Sa-yan at least still have some control to not hurt Illic outside of their intimacy. (Not defending what he did though)
There's only one thing that can tame sadistic partners and that is love and care for others.
