She's badass without becoming a Mary Sue. She's got flaws, but they are realistic and consistent.
In fact, all of the characters of the story are interesting - even the ex-husband (although we hate him and he should eat dirt. But he's still an interesting antagonist).
There are also some interesting themes at play; faith, politics, redemption, self-determination.
A more mature plot than many stories of the same genre and it's quite refreshing.
