To my dear authors... YOU DON"T NEED TOXICITY FOR YOUR STORY TO SELL.
Sure, there are consumers who love good rough smut, including me; but don't treat us readers like idiots who ignore the plot and only care about spice. At least, not me.
A strong story doesn't even need explicit scenes to be brilliant (Lost in the Clouds proves that). And no, I'm not only looking for fluff. I want complex, layered characters and dark themes. So, I'm calling Flashlight out not out of "moral outrage", but because the plot simply isn't good enough to justify Aaron's actions. The non-con and confinement scenes feel totally out of place.
Everyone has kinks and fetishes, and I get that this is an outlet. But you can still call out an author when the story stops delivering on quality (some of these stories get a pass coz of the artwork. Never mind if the story is ass.)
If a story uses dark tropes, it needs compelling reason and well execution to back it up. I’ve read hundreds of works featuring non-con, but those elements were grounded in hard-hitting narratives. Pure jealousy between a supposedly romantic couple, on the other hand, doesn't make any sense.
"Killing Stalking" is polarizing, but it’s widely recognized for its strong execution. "Ouroboros" is less mainstream, but it's one of the few BL manhwas that tackles trauma and PTSD genuinely well. These two are psychological drama done right! They make you feel uncomfortable because dark tropes should make you feel uncomfortable, not just entertained or aroused. That’s how you know a story is stimulating your brain, and that’s what separates a true psychological drama from a series that uses the tag as cover for kink-fuel.
"Oh, but Flashlight isn't psychological!"
Well, then damn... that was the only way the author could have made this work. If it's not a psychological then, how is Yujin supposed to accept this? How is Aaron supposed to recover from this?
My dear authors, people talk about your work because of shock value might bring temporary fame, but it's for all the wrong reasons. I hope you know a good story will always stand on its own.
This and Killing Stalking is Psychological manhwa done right!
Trope like this should make you feel uncomfortable not 'entertained' or 'arouse'. That's how you know it stimulated your brain more than anything else. And that's how you know it's different from bl manhwas that seems to tag itself as 'Psychological' but are actually just 'kink-fuel'.
Listen... I love unhinged characters, psychos even.. (Killing Stalking is my fave bl manhwa ever) but if the author wants to go on full psycho, at least execute it well. Give us depth! Not some crazy rich bastard who simply is prideful for being left behind!
I get it, he was hurt, but really???CHAINED???NO AFTERCARE???FOOD ON THE FLOOR??NO CLOTHES??? What Yujin did isn't enough to be treated this way. He is in his Jiwook era but at Juyeon had his compelling reasons.... damn... Oh to be compared to a real bad manhwa. What have you done authornim. The redemption arc must be so satisfying otherwise, how do we recover from here???
That one post in X saying Jake should be under red flag too because he dug up info of Shin, wiretapped him, set cameras...
EXCUSEEEE ME!??!
Are we seriously comparing an elite undercover agent to leads who SAed their partners out of jealousy?
Of course, he would dig info and trail. That's PART. OF. HIS. JOB,
Back in those early chapters when Jake sent him to work to the garage, Shin found out his resume was already submitted, they had a drink and Shin asked if he trusted him now after digging his info up. Jake answered “Not yet. I’ll figure you out in my own way and you should do the same with me. Legal means or not”
Basically, letting Shin know he would keep digging and giving permission for Shin to do the same.
And when Shin first found out the truth, Jake told him gangs were coming for him and it would be safer if he stayed inside, but he never forced him. Jake just said, “Once you walk out that door, I won’t be able to protect you.” He could’ve locked him in. Tied him down, but he didn't. He only stepped in when he couldn’t stand the worry anymore that's when he showed up at that motel where Shin was staying.
His methods might not be conventional, but we really have to look at the full context to understand who Jake is. It would be completely out of character if Jake trusted Shin blindly from the start and never kept watch. And, even if he has his info and videos, he never used it against Shin. Remember, Jake character is really called alien and 'he has no emotions' and cares for nothing except complete his mission.
That’s what Rolfe, Caesar, and Izmel warned him about. The old Jake would’ve walked away, especially when Shin got tangled with Ross. Instead, he claimed Shin as his “person/gang wife” to shield him, risking his mission.
Basically, Jake started to tread carefully between mission and obsession, until the line separating the two blurred. The important thing is, in the previous chapter, Shin literally gave his permission and told Jake he'll let him know if he needs to stop.
Jake isn't your expressive top but he's definitely a green flag.
Someone said Monk is out of character crying and acting like a virgin...Don't forget he hasn't been with anyone for the longest time. He has only been with Nanjo for quite some time now before the fall out. So he's holding back so bursting it as easy like that is understandable. Also, that simply means he has really fallen... he's not anymore that old monk who never cares what the other guy wants or feels during sex. Plus the fact he just came from the hospital and treading the waters with Nanjo again. You know that feeling when you're scared to disappoint someone again?
I bet we'll see Monk really losing the upperhand in the next chapters, while Nanjo will slowly rise as a power bottom.
I predict Monk would soon need a friend to confide with... Enters his babe (that other black-haired guy?)
That will soon be a wake upcall to Nanjo... Oh I bet we will see a jealous Nanjo soon. And I can't wait!!!
I don't know how to describe it but if you want to see how a mature secured relationship looks like.. This is it!! Power couple indeed like... They are so romantic without being too cringey, just two strong-willed men ready to die for each other. Hit the jackpot because they also have the best chemistry in bed.
They're passionate but no obsessed. No coercion no overdoing it, just them enjoying every bit of it. Arghhhh

I literally cried for Roan at that letting go scene.... dude.... I finished this hoping for a better ending...
I'm genuinely curious if these authors have real stockholm syndrome coz there's no way you'll depict a character so strong and smart then make him go stupid over a man.
Anyway the artwork is beautiful.
