Does anyone have spoiler about what’s going on in the castle
Why is everyone acting weird and who does she need protection from ?
I haven’t read the novel so this isn’t a spoiler, it’s just what I think, but he’s not assigning the knights to protect her. He’s assigning them to keep her away from his retainers, the lesser Nobles in his domain, because he married her with the understanding with his retainers that once his curse was cured, and he no longer needed someone that could fight him during the night, that he would divorce her and marry one of their daughters or someone else that would give him a political marriage, a beneficial marriage. Since the land that she comes from is incredibly poor, she brings nothing to the table other than her ability with a sword, but he’s fallen in love with her at this point so he does not want her to ever leave. He’s not planning to divorce her, ever, and he’s worried that if she meets any of his retainers in the castle that they’ll belittle her and basically remind her that she’s temporary and put into her head that she is not going to be his wife forever and that she’s going to eventually have to leave and he’s worried that she’ll believe it and when the time comes, she’ll try to leave him because she thinks she has to or something and he’s terrified she’ll leave him to go back to her homeland, cause he doesn’t want that, he wants her to stay with him forever regardless of what she wants.
Although this would make sense, I think the reason that they're all afraid of him is an entirely different story. The "divorce after he heals" issue has already passed since the Duke already took care of that problem when he forced the Welch family to close their gates. I think it's clear from that point on that the Duke has no intentions of divorcing Marion.
From what I understand in the way the vassals were so scared of him, it seems the Duke already did a mass cleansing of his domain before and was thus left with only a handful of vassals to take care of the duchy while he fights in the war. I think it was implied that he personally saw through their punishment. The remaining vassals got a little braver to start embezzling taxes again because they know that it wouldn't be wise for the Duke to harm them. But they're still terrified since it seems that the Duke was very cruel with his methods (I wouldn't be surprised if it was later revealed that he basically massacred the perpetrators' entire family line with how scared they are of him). As for why the Duke is keeping Marion locked up, well, the easiest answer is that he is obsessed and possessive of her. It also seems that he didn't want to give Marion a reason to choose to leave him so he keeps up the act of a gentleman and purposely keeps Marion away from possible situations where his cruelty would be very apparent. We already saw traces of this kind of behavior from him when they were travelling and he blamed Kalts for his rude words when it seems that he has always been that way.
