Furthermore, being able to pay for college with one person just taking a bunch of part time jobs doesn't seem realistic in the US. Maybe if you'd been working for a while and you'd saved up some but doing it suddenly doesn't seem realistic, even for cheaper in state college.

The author of the novel is Mary Calmes and according to her bio she's from Kentucky so she is from the US and furthermore from a state with ranches that's somewhat in the south where this is based in. I wonder why there are so many stereotypes and inaccuracies here then like college, the power parents have over marriages, etc. Even Rand's action of stopping Charlotte's tuition seems far fetched. If it is realistic, then its reflective of an extremely traditional, southern, US.
Depends on how they were raised and cultural things. It's not really unheard of people wanting their parents permission, sometimes they even do ultimatums if they disagree. Legally theres nothing stopping them but for some people their parents approval is most important.
