Tbf, if CPS was told by an innkeeper that a woman just left a child with him and the bio dad then shows up, they'd probably rule in his favor. To them, she abandoned her own child with a complete stranger and they have no idea if she would come back.

I hope he doesn't get too pissed / pushy at her not believing him and needing time like she went through so much trauma and heartbreak
I honestly hope that her trauma will keep influencing her decisions (like how the maids death made her overprotective) as much as i only want good things to happen to her i also believe this complexity of cause and effect is nice
I picked it up when i dropped all the way back and was like

And only now came back and wow this was such a nice read
