Boring and overrated
I hear you. I used to think like that too, but after the manhua stopped updating, I decided to read the novels and now I'm a huge fan. It's definitely slowburn, and I remember almost quitting halfway for needing to make notes while reading (the names and places were hard to understand, even the culture). Luckily the english novels have a list and an explanation for every major character, place and hard terms.
Btw, the story includes these tags and more: sexy swordfighting, awkward sexual situations, unresolved sexual tension, power bottom, gore and angst, hostage situations and kidnapping, etc.
Tastes differ and it is ok, no need to think smth is wrong with yours or with other's. This type of stories are heavily influenced by chinese culture, philosophy and mythology, so it could be quite confusing for an unprepared reader but the more you read similar stuff the easier it becomes. I personally loved HOB, i am not a pro in Chinese culture but after you read so many chinese novels you kinda get it all from the context.
The manhua would have been extremely difficult to follow, if I didn’t read the novels first. A lot has to be explained within a short period of time, so a lot of the plot gets rushed. + A bunch of new characters get introduced that have similar sounding names for foreigners, which makes is even more challenging to read. At least that's how I felt reading the manhua version of Heaven Official's Blessing. Do you have a favourite manhua that you’re comparing this to?
so true about the names! I read so many chinese novels and sometimes manhuas but close the page and ask me the name of the mc and i will not be able to do it i cannot remember any names at all and sometimes they are relatives (esp the case if they are like 5 blood related brothers or smth) with the same surname and similar first names and then it is even worse. And if manhua at least helps with having a distinctly different art of the characters (though not always, sometimes they all look the same), we dont have this with novels so i got confused while reading some novels it is a bit better with korean names though. Still cannot remember them afterwards. It might sound nationalist but i cannot help it. I love reading asian bl (and het too) but i cannot remember any names
Then can you please add the manhuas which you are comparing this to?
And fyi, this is a slow burn story + you do know that Chinese govt are very strict with censorships right? So often any historical manhua won't have much romance scene added. There will be exceptions for some other authors but the result of getting caught means Jailed.
And I don't how which manhua you compared this to and called this mid when this is one of the most famous historical and greenest manhua out there.
Also nobody forced you to read it anyways, because if a guy yearning for another for 800years, lit up 300 lanterns in the sky and built countless shrines and statues in his honor before they were finally reunited seems mid to you then okay fine. Let's move on
As an Asian, I don't really have much problem with their names, must be because I'm used to it. It's fine and totally understandable when you're not use to it, dw~
Oh plus the looking the same part, honestly Asians genetics are really strong(lol) because I have 2 sisters and.... We kinda look similar, I look like the mixture of both of my sisters XD so welp. And the most funny thing is... Sometimes you find people (strangers) out there that looks like someone you know but they aren't
But asians do not look the same irl ))) i am from a country in central asia, so i can tell (no problem with names here, cz they do not sound anything like chinese or korean names, mostly they are taken from the native language so the meaning is obvious to me like Happiness or Beautiful flower and sometimes from arab, as most of the people are Muslim here). But in manhua, in donghua and smts in manhwas it is often the case if they go for realism and make everyones hair colour black.
Cz tastes differ. It is a good novel. Just something you dont like or may be read at the wrong time. I remember trying to read Anna Karenina at 17 and i dnf it, it was so boring. But another try some years later and i couldnt stop reading it, loved it. Smts it is an age thing, smts it is a mood thing, and smts it is just not your thing. Dont overthink it, just go and read smth that you like, reading is about enjoyment (and smts studying), so no need to understand why you do not like smth everyone likes and why everyone like it while you do not.
I totally agree on thissssss!!
There's this mushroom manhua (omg I forgot the name) I started out with the novel.... I got bored but then after a year I decided to read it again.... And damnnnn, I completed it in just 2 freaking days not even 2days but would say 1½day. Same goes to Anna Huan's Twisted love. I honestly didn't get why my friends and others liked it soooo much to the point of buying the whole novel series. Then I tried reading Twisted Love, and trust me.... I binge read it in just 2days......omg if only I was thattt active in studies XD
Hmmm I understand... In my case, I've been me and my friend were mistaken as twins for looking alike but the good thing is different names and title BUT the names here is ALSO just damn..... Since I'm from a tribal state, where under the state we got around 9-12 different tribe with different cultures but as a whole we are called as Naga (its not about that snake or something omg) so under one tribe we got our own mother tongue, and our mother tongue consist of 2 more types (crazy ik but bear with me) and with that, we have in just 1 culture, more than 4-5title/surname. So they are from the same culture but different title but same name. And worst thing is the pronunciation of the name. (And sometimes we find people with same name and title with the same meaning XD)
So back to my point, We got people with the same name but with a different surname (or should I say title, because we use the word title here). BUT different title doesn't mean from different places or something. Same name but different title. And the most funniest part is that, sometimes or should I say often, if you're not good at remembering names or their faces. Trust me 100% sure you'll mismatch their names and identity.
Another funny thing is their faces, omg. It's like playing puzzle games. You think they belong to a particular tribe but boomm they belong to a tribe that you are completely unaware from XD. Plus the face similarity to one particular tribe is just wonderful. (Eg- you can think of it as koreans drawing American people in a manhwa. They say the character is American but doesn't look like American and rather more of Asian lol)
Me dummy, I think im going out of context now XD

This was low-key good lol.
