You know there’s more than just safe words, don’t you?

If people are doing a scene where they're bound and gagged/ sensory deprived, there are still a lot of ways to communicate a safety signal or safe word. If you want examples I'm happy to share some (as well as resources for other reputable kink educators). Just cuz we didn't see it negotiated doesn't mean it's not something the Dom and sub don't have in place. That said, if not seeing the detailed negotiation of a scene takes you out of the fantasy and keeps you from enjoying specific sex scenes in a story, that's totally valid.

The response is no longer there on my end but I saw that you reached out and wanted to learn some different ways that people can safe-word while being gagged/ bound or being sensory deprived. I'm happy to share what I know and give some examples that could have been used in this specific instance.

There are a LOT of different types of safety signals you can use with bound hands and no ability to speak. Many people use a clicker, like the ones used for training dogs, because it's small and easy to hold and press in a lot of different boundaries positions. But there are many options that don't require a clicker as well!

Humming or singing a specific short tune, holding up a certain number of fingers in a pattern, knocking something over with your foot (like a half-full water bottle), fake sneezing twice in a row, holding and squeezing a squeaky toy twice in a row, wearing a bracelet or anklet with bells on it that you can shake, grabbing & pulling a bright colored piece of fabric that's hung next to where your hands are bound, tapping your knuckle against a wall, or dropping something small that you're holding in your hand (like a figurine or bell) are popular ones. Many people will use more than one to communicate different things (squeeze a squeaky toy for a check in and drop it to call red and end the scene, for example). Certain signals work better for certain scenarios and are more manageable for specific positions or physical disabilities. It's very important that people know they have options regarding something as crucial and personal as safewords and safety signals, especially those with physical disabilities that struggle to use something like a clicker.

It's also important to know that a lot of these systems are imperfect and require the Dom to pay extra close attention. But that's part of what all participants consent to when negotiating a scene that requires these signals and when picking the signals together.

For this specific scene something like a clicker, squeaky toy, holding something to drop, or doing specific hand signals would all be good options!
