This, so hard this. Imo it feels like the author just got bored of his character and took a drastic change with it for shits and giggles. Maybe she couldn't work out how a cold apathetic character could do a chasing arc. Regardless it's agonizingly noticeable and annoying.
Before he didn't care at all, now he fell in love for the first time, he has never experienced these emotions before.
