yes they gone to a lot of troubles before they even got together, they were also high school sweethearts and also ahsley is such a lovable character when he was in high school everyone loves him in school, but everything got fcked up so bad when they got separated which leads to how he raise his own children, I can't spoil it bcs honestly it's better to read the novel to experience their story
