Whenever I read something involving rape when I was younger, I’d just think, "Yeah, well, that really sucks," and skip over it. But now that I’m older, I increasingly realize just how disgusting and inhumane such things are. I can really empathize with the person involved—you learn to put yourself in someone else's shoes quite well through things like writing stories—and I understand the misery and fear they must feel, as well as that inability to shake the sensation of being dirty or tainted. I’m glad I think the way I do and have reached this realization.
By the way, I didn't mean to imply that other people can't put themselves in others' shoes; I simply believe that we engage with this more.
