why is it that most people tend to love the side couples or second couples a lot more than the main/previous couple? ive been wondering this because i always find myself gravitating towards the side characters as opposed to the main ones in most things i read
do they just tend to have better dynamics or something? what makes side couples click better than the main for you guys
A lot of the times 1st couple tends to be more on the wholesome, healthy side. Things like coworkers, roommates, friends to lovers, etc. Meanwhile 2nd couple have a complicated dynamics. not always but a lot of the time it includes re encounters after a messy past or they face more difficulties bc of their backgrounds
In short authors usually try more complex characters after, when they already have a successful couple

youre so right omg, i like when authors take a chance and choose to go with less typical dynamics
No story in particular that I have in mind when writing this, but sometimes when there is a side couple (or dynamic/ship with side character/s), it often feels "better" because there isn't as much to go off of. Idk how to explain it. But when you know less, things feel more intriguing, or mysterious it is, you want to know more and you gravitate twords it. I feel this way sometimes even outside of this specific topic, like when I'm starting a new story (any genre, but especially with couple pairings) and it feels super interesting at first when you know absolutely nothing and they're leading you on, but then the author reveals more and more and ur just like "...oh. it's really a nothing burger". I think a major part is just expectation, or like the people above me mentioned, dynamics lean heavily into it.
Stories where a character feels or looks like they fit into a different role or spotlight tend to stand out more imo, rather than just shoving them into a category

,also ngl this could just be poor writing though, because there are lots of times when I don't feel this way.
But it's also quite often when
I'll read something, the author is hyping up this dynamic/backstory/character, and then when it drops it's the run of the mill, overdone troupes, or just much simpler than they made it out to be

Not all but some second couple has better story line than the first one. For example Banana scandal. Tho I love both couples.
