basically-
in the novel, once maxi has said shes going to the tower and riftan finally says go he then doesnt talk to her at all, he shuts himself down completely. On the day shes set to leave on the boat and is sailing away, riftan comes and is yelling about how he lied that he was fine for her to go, hes trying to throw himself in the water to go after the boat and crying.
