As a bisexual person with a very difficult youth, this story was like a balm to my soul, it made me think that things will be ok after all, I have my friends that are like family, and my beloved, all I need is to forgive myself and be happy. Happy pride to all, this really was pure love all around the cast.
So from what I understand up to now, the villagers are like farm animals for him, useful, but will be sacrifized if problematic, and only raised for a purpose, you wont waste resources on chickens that dont lay eggs.
The hounds are literally just that, hounds, they protect and hunt, he would hear their alerts but doesnt care for their opinion, at the end of the day you attend to a dogs bark but dont ask them life advice, you dont kill a dog right away for missbehaving or for killing another animal, but you train them and punish them if they do wrong, if they are untrainable they probably will be put down as well.
