He does displays some deeply self defeating traits such as an intense need for control, distrust, emotional detachment and manipulative tendencies...but I think a lot of his behaviour is rooted in his traumatic past, fear, shame and deeply distorted understanding of intimacy (especially when it comes to his relationship with Michele). He's a psychologically complex character...and while his trauma helps explain some of his behaviour, it doesn't excuse the harm he causes.
The way I knew it at the start that he was the Duke but then the confession and angst made me think what if he isn't the Duke only to find out that yes he is OMG THE SCREAM I LEFT OUT I WAS CLUTCHING ON MY BED FOR FCK SAKE THINKING OF ALL THE ANGST WOULD HAVE CAME IF HE REALLY WAS JUST A SERVANT
