this series IS racist, if you do not understand why it is racist, I’d suggest you do your research on either a search engine or in this comment section because it’s been explained many times already.
This is not a debate where you get to decide what’s racist or not, only those affected by this can determine if it is so.
This author is Korean, they’ve already distorted many facts about the Civil War, Slavery and history afterwards.
Definition of a White Savior Complex:
- A Character in media who helps the marginalized not out of their own goodwill, but because it gives them something in return, this can be pride, psychological release, etc. It’s important to note that the white savior complex treats POC as helpless individuals, when for the vast majority of history, they’ve fought on the frontlines for their own freedom, and it was only after they showed resistance that some white individuals chose to help.
- The Union was not a just entity, their reason for helping slaves was for their own profits, hence why mc’s family was so rich
- “freeing” a slave meant nothing when they could barely do anything by themselves because of how racist laws were back then, a pouch of money could be confiscated immediately if a white man wished it, and they could be killed if I white man asked for it, doesn’t matter what relation they had.
- MC is not a selfless individual, his actions were fueled by his grief not his kindness. He only carried out his duties because it’s what his family was already doing.
- “Mixed Native American” implies rape, meaning that his mother was likely a victim. Many POC were being sexual assaulted and abused on plantations, interracial relationships were outlawed as well so this really is the most plausible answer for this era.
Lastly, when writing history we have to remember who affected the most and who suffered the most losses, while a white man may lose his family and fortune, an indigenous or black slave would lose their ability to speak their own language, their bodily automony, their means live, and even their own limbs. Many had to suffer from starvation, dehydration, torture, sexual assault and many other things everyday. Some even committed suicide or killed each other just to spare themselves from the horrors that would be inflicted upon them in the future.
To write a story set in this time and centering it around a white man is just insanely disgusting, and trying to write a suicidal sob story for him and trying to make a him a white saviour is even worse because it’s only being used to make him appear as a good person, but his actions are the bare minimum. To have a mixed Native American man call himself a slave is just distasteful, not every joke or act of sarcasm is funny or playful.
To end it off, this is not the Author’s history, and when you’re using history, especially in fiction, it’s important to understand that history and who was affected by it, because I can ensure that no one with knowledge of transpired during this time is seeing this as anything more than blatant fetishizing slave history for some stupid master slave dynamic
If you think this manhwa isn’t racist you are either racist or extremely ignorant.
If you want know why people have issues with this manhwa here are the following:
- White Saviour Complex (google it)
- Removal or Santiziation of history (in this context centering a white man over the affected victimized majority being indigenous and black slaves)
- having a character call himself a slave (with the setting and time period this is not funny or sarcastic)
- the “sob story” that the author gave mc to garner sympathy is laughable, his family died to support a good cause, slaves committed suicide to avoid being beaten, whipped and raped regularly, some were lynched, others cannibalized probably all sorts of disgusting things were done to them. Some of them even had to kill their own babies to spare them from what could only be considered hell
- The MC’s family is still rich, there’s absolutely no way they’re rich without still earning from slave labour
- While he and his family fought in the war they still owned slaves, he only let them go because he had lost everything else, that’s not generosity, he did it for himself, hence white savior complex.
- The Civil war is an extremely sensitive topic due to how often it is downplayed and abused in media, especially in how it relates to how indigenous and black people are treated today. Slavery did not end after the Civil war and what took place afterwards was still a time filled with racism. White people were not the main sufferers of the civil war and to portray media as such is heinous.
- the Union was not perfect or innocent, they helped slaves for their own reasons and profits.
- Mc has stated he was only in the Union due to his father being there, he has no overt showings of being a “good person”
- Anybody who knows anything about Korean history would understand that if the story was set during Imperial Japan, and it was a Korean slave and Japanese man Korea would have this Author’s head (Koreans get upset when kpop groups even have Chinese or Japanese members due to history) Why then is it ok when another country’s history is used.
It is extremely disrespectful to POC who actually fought for their lives and rights in America to have someone who evidently knows nothing about their history, take their experiences and turn it into a master slave romance just sell it as regular old media.
Ignorant people can still be racist, you don’t have to say slurs or discriminate to be racist. Being racist can be as simple as treating someone as lesser in anyway shape or form simply because of their race.
If you think that this is ok because “well allowed kidnapping and rape so why not this?”
Don’t speak for other people that’s your shit not ours, and even then, in bl, none of those actions are related to a certain demographic other than mainly being perpetuated by men… and we’re talking abt bl. A very stupid argument.
Yes if you’re on here you’re not supporting the author BUT it’s important people spread awareness so that these plot lines do not become a norm. We don’t want history to be bastardized for entertainment.
If you are going to support the author either way, this post is not for you! Fuck you!
For everyone else, I think people should learn understand why things are called “history” and why history recognizes what roles people played in certain time periods, because media reflects history, and demonstrates to modern individuals what happened and why the world is the way it is today. There’s nothing wrong with basing fiction of off history but if you’re going to base it off of history you have to be extremely vague (As in just have them be cowboys) or extremely accurate (Address the entirety of the Civil War and The time period afterwards), anything inbetween is just nitpicking facts in a time where you require the whole story to understand.
Please be respectful to people’s history, this isn’t the author’s.
I’m not abt to watch ANYBODY regardless of race, pretend that writing a story set in post civil war America, centering a WHITE MAN in it, showing him being a white saviour by “helping” the slaves HIS FAMILY OWNED. While having an indigenous man, the most marginalized race in America “jokingly” call himself a humble slave. Yall have gone fucking crazy cause god forbid anybody wrote a story about an Imperial Japanese soldier who saved a Korean sex slave and started a romance with them that entire country would erupt.
The issue here is that a white man’s story was never the focus of the civil war, it wasn’t for white people and it certainly was stopped by white people and while the Civil war “ended”, black and indigenous people are still suffering from discrimination to this day, some victims are still alive.
You can also recognize that he only did all this because he lost everything, I mean why would a white man who has no family or friends still want to keep slaves.
This manhwa reads like someone who knows nothing about American history and those who were affected by it, and honestly anyone who defends can die for all I care. I don’t need my history being sanitized for some fujoshis who wanna see two guys kiss and fuck for 50 chapters.

Yall gotta stop bringing up the whole “where was this for the rapist manhwa” WE NOT READING THAT SHIT OMFGGG, if yall also got a problem with that why are you not complaining???
You guys need to understand proportionality, Fujoshis have been writing rape plots since the 1980s Japan… it was already a “trend” there, whenever anyone so much as brought up “hey this is really insane” they’d get called a puritan wokejoshi, and they were a barely audible minority.
I just find it funny we’re comparing different forms of discrimination and abuse like it’s the olympics, and you know what, next time a new series starts with rape in it direct me to it and I will tear up hell, BUT this plot is a first so we have time to nip the issue in the bud, the issue of sexual assault, that frankly spans all of East Asian media including being in anime, novels, manhwa, manhua, etc. is a widespread media culture issue, it’s not isolated or singular there is SO MUCH OF IT, if we actually wanted to do something about we’d all have to band together to do it, but you guys are already trying to fight back against stopping racism so I see no hope in that direction so I’ll choose to simply not engage with those stories cause for some reason they all go viral cause yall eat em up!
speak your truth some weird bitches having selective outrage and deciding to turn their attention to the rape in bl… girl ppl do talk about that ALOT but this is not the time and place your invalidating people and dismissing the issue at hand. also you can choose to not engage in disgusting shit like that.
