Genuinely the first half of the story was so hard for me to read (mostly because of violin guy (yes I forgot his name)) but the last half of the story was some of the most peak shit I’ve read in a while. As a Greek mythology nerd I had a lot of fun connecting their story to the story of Eurydice and Orpheus and other myths
So basically in the Greek myth Orpheus and Eurydice, Orpheus is the son of Apollo and one of the 7 muses and has these like music charming powers or whatever. When his lover Eurydice died of a fatal snakebite, he entered the underworld and basically charmed everyone and everything in his way with his lyre that he brought until he reached Hades. He basically plays this sad song for hades and Persephone and they were so moved by his dedication that they agreed to let Eurydice back to the land of the living as long as Orpheus could walk in front of Eurydice and not look back until they reached the light outside of the underworld. But, while walking, Orpheus was suddenly flooded with doubt as he couldn’t hear Eurydice footsteps and he finally looked back and then Eurydice had to return to the underworld. It’s a tale of the fragility of love, self sabotage, and how no one can escape death. When it comes to garam and heejae, heejae is Orpheus. He is the great musician who is constantly searching for “the sound” in his students, sabotages his relationships with almost everyone who gets too close to him, and his journey as a pianist shows parallels to orpheus’s journey out of the underworld as he’s completely surrounded by darkness. Then enter Garam. Garam is heejae’s light that he seeks for just as Orpheus seeks the light so he can be together again with Eurydice. If anything, garam is heejae’s Eurydice, but, hence the title of the story, garam shares more contrasts with Eurydice. Eurydice dies of a fatal snake bite, while heejae’s love for garam is similar with the snake bite, but unlike Eurydice, garam embraces the pain of it and endures it for his love for heejae. And, unlike Eurydice, garam makes sound. That sound was what had heejae obsessed with him in the first place. The sound that garam never stopped making. I also feel like there were other references to mythology too. I remember that there was this one panel after they argued with each other where heejae and garam were facing away from each other and there was a mention of Janis the pianist, but I felt like it was also a reference to Janus the Roman god of time. Janus the god is depicted as to having two heads facing the opposite direction, one to the past, one to the future. Heejae is the face of the future as he keeps pushing garam forward in his career. Meanwhile garam faces the past as he tries to mend his relationship with heejae from where it all originally began. It also symbolizes how the relationship between the two isn’t like Horowitz’s and Janis’s anymore and how garam is no longer Janis and trying to break free from heejae’s grasp as a mentor and student relationship. Especially as their feelings for each other develop over time, they become more like rachmaninoff and Horowitz and their relationship becomes more like a partnership rather than mentor and student.
