Leofred is the crown prince and has alwayz been the crown prince, flawless, smart and the son of the empress, but when the 7th prince Stravin was around 8-9 years old i think, it started to show abilitys that was beffiting of an emperor and started to have the support of a fraction, wich was led (and it was the idea to present him as a potetial crown prince candidate) of Satie father, prince Stravin was gaining much support and the emperor was starting to change his mind of who would be the crown prince, so the empress that wanted her own son to have the crown, and yes hated Stravin mother, order to kill him, usgin this guy of the arcana tower with his ancient magitech, that way she would be clear of guilt and no one would found out.. but like she hated Satie family (like prince leofred and the beggining) she wanted to get rid of her, she didnt particulary liked Irene she just didnt wanted Satie and well, Irene offer her self as a puppet and the empress liked to be on control of everything, her son and his wife, but Satie ruined it, and she wanted to kill her but that geve them more evidence to put her down with Prince Stravin murder

TLDR; Although he's the crown prince the Noble's backed the other prince because of his abilities so the empress killed him so there wouldn't be any challenges or revolutions

not all the nobles; there was a faction supporting Stravin wich is called the noble faction that faction is leaded by Sati family and the royal faction supporting Leofred but they are nobles that support the imperial family, mostly the empress, wich is why Leofred is worried because if he uncover his mother that faction will no longer support him, and now that Sati is the only Regina she will be empress, she will marry the next emperor and that might not be Leofred if he is revoced with his title and support..

also the empress didnt kill Stravin so there wouldnt be revolution, she just didnt wanted to hand over the power, less to another child, it has to be her blood to stand on the throne

Literally. That's why she wasn't mentioned much in the novel she read. Cause apparently, 'Ertha' in the novel was eaten. Literally eaten. Their blood can also purify wizards, that's why he stayed sane after eating her
