Someone posted a comment farther down spoiling what happens later on in the novel with quotes and everything. My memory is poor but basically after regaining his memories, he abuses her. She leaves him and he finds out she's pregnant. He tries to grovel and repent and she forgives him and they get back together. But OP says the abuse is really cruel and basically unforgivable making the groveling afterward seem lackluster in comparison. Basically, the whole thing takes a dramatic tonal shift that doesn't really make sense and makes for a poor story.
