The ending story didn't stand out to me that much when I first read it, but one of my family's dogs passed away recently, and it hit pretty hard seeing the ghost dog, especially knowing it's likely the dog he lost in highschool.
It's a great story all around, I liked it the first time I read it, and I'll continue liking it every time I come back to reread it when I'm bored.
