He was kinda manipulated by Penelope to loving her. That master and servant relationship was soooooo toxic. His mind was twisted from the beginning tho, but Penelope did make it more twisted. He was constantly being used by not only the villain of the story, but the hero. Now he dies for the hero, forever loving her. His death gets glossed over a bit too.I can't help but feel bad for the guy.
