if you click "I am now reading" or "already read" you get a notification at a specific time of the day for all the ones that have been updated

No it gives you an option to subscribe to manga. If it’s subscribed to the manga then it shows a check mark and it will notify you whenever it updates. If you don’t want to subscribe, then take out the check mark and it won’t notify you.
