I don't think the grandpa has any bad intentions. I think he's just trying to help our guy and baby out with some fresh meat without being too open about it since the villagers aren't too close or doesn't get along well with newcomers. But that my assumption, giving the man the benefit of the doubt tbh
I really like this story. Even though the ending was only them running away, it was beautiful. I needed my babies to be happy forever even if it's just running away and starting over.
