honestly, their marriage failed at the start because of him barely communicating with her. He shows his affection, by throwing money, because he thought that's how it's done since it works on his foster parents. There's also the fact that his 'low' birth makes him feel like he's not worth of wedding a princess
Now their marriage works because he actually communicates, and shows his affection openly. He learned to accept his origin. Sadly, this only happened after a lot of traumatized violet, and a groveling winter. He felt so awful about the life she lived that he wanted to kill himself.(He did try too, but it didn't work out so...)
So i think in this fictional setting, they do suit each other. For better or for worse Ig. This is a lot coming from a no 1 winter hater.
