People get upset over stories like this, but when it’s a mafia romance about a powerful mob boss kidnapping someone because of a debt, abusing them, or even sexually assaulting them, suddenly nobody seems to have a problem with it.

I’m from Italy, where the mafia is not some distant fictional concept. It’s a real and painful part of our history. Mafia organizations have committed terrible crimes in my country and destroyed countless lives. Yet mafia romances are often treated as the peak of the genre, and most readers don’t care about the real history behind them.

But when a story touches on another real and important topic, suddenly everyone has a meltdown. The double standard is honestly fascinating. Either we accept that fiction can explore dark and controversial subjects, or we apply the same standards to every genre instead of picking and choosing which ones are acceptable.
