I think Mildred kinda got it wrong.. Iris is mad because her own mother is dotting on Ashley so much and giving her so much attention since she's Cinderella. She has this idea in her head that Ashley is for the prince and that they will eventually be together. I just don't like how she doesn't realize how she hasn't really paid attention to her own daughters and thinks that her daughters don't like Ashley when they're actually doing fine and getting along.

she literally used pity card on her own daughter, i get it like ashleys feelings is valid but literally invalidating and lowkey manipulating(//not that she intends to do it but unconciosly leads that way//) her owns daughter feelings is so fucking frustrating. its her right to feel that way especially there is literally maternal bond between them.

Iris said that she basically don't understand how Mildred could even love Ashley since it's hard not to hate her for how their life become, that's literally the question that she asked and Mildred gave a perfect answer for that. Why would she address a problem about her favoring Ashley when she never really see it that way and her daughters hasn't even make her realized that yet.

Mildred kinda guilt-tripped her into saying that... or maybe i just see it that way? Iris said that she doesnt like her being nice to ashley and that she knows its a childish thought and that she knows she has to be fair. but the take away from that is that Iris said "Lily and I are your daughters too" (emphasis on the word "too"). then Mildred pulls the "so you want me to be hard on her" card so Iris is bamboozled. you can see it when she stumbles over her words. How is she supposed to say that shes jealous of Ashley when they're step-sisters. I think iris is trying to explain it in a way where shes not being direct so she decided to go with "sometimes when i see mother be nice to ashley... I'm a little annoyed."

I can see how it seems like Mildred is guilt tripping her but really, as Iris literal question is basically 'how can you not hate ashley?', Mildred answers quite well with placing that she couldn't hate ashley as she could imagine Iris and Lily being the unfortunate child that Ashley is.

Also, I don't really think Iris had any problem to say that she's jealous of Ashley when she could said, "how can you love her?" (a bold question if you ask me.). She firstly confess that she doesn't like Mildred being nice to Ashley so asking the question of "do you want me to be hard on her? " is simply just a blunt way to put it. Since she's not actually hard or particulaly strict on any of her children hence she didn't see her being nice to Ashley as something special only to that one child. Iris may think of it as favouring but the thought of it probably didn't cross Mildred minds as she was even caught off guard by Iris's outburst. Then, Iris redirect the question to asking how exactly Mildred can possibly not hate Ashley and Mildred just aswers it accordingly.

Its hard admitting that youre jealous, that's why Iris doesn't just let Mildred know how she really feels. Iris doesn't straight out say things like "I don't like it when you're nice to Ashley" but rather "sometimes, I dont like it when youre nice to ashley" (i think the word choice there plays a big part in how Iris is being played out). She's not being direct and is being round-about, which also plays a role in how she views ashley as well. Iris doesn't think that Ashley doesn't deserve love, its just that Mildred has been paying attention to Ashley a lot and dotting on her. She even said that she knows its not Ashley's fault. It was the jealousy that prompted the emotional outburst, not the dislike of ashley. As i said, i think the siblings are doing fine and are beginning to learn how to live with each other (as we can see them previously interacting and playing together in previous chapters).

And I don't have an issue with how Mildred answered Iris's question. It's just that Mildred herself doesnt realize that shes been focusing a lot on Ashley and hasn't really beein paying attention to her own two daughters. thats what made me feel like "broo nooooo equality for all!!"

I agree with you to some extent, Iris could very likely be jealous and while she doesn't think Ashley isn't deserving of love, she certainly thinks that the love Ashley received from her mother is more than she supposed to. However, that is all from Iris's perspective. Even if Iris is jealous, it doesn't mean Mildred is doing the wrong thing.

Jealousy among siblings is normal, the younger siblings was envied for being the center of attention, the eldest was envied of being the great standard in the family while the middle felt jealous of others for receiving all of the attention. Who's fault is all of this? Sometimes, it was no one's fault.

A lot of people keep on saying that Mildred isn't being fair and that she's favoring Ashley more than her own daughters. I disagree to that, while there's moment that it could seem that she's favoring Ashley, most of their moment is just cause from how incompetent Ashley is (like a toddler needing more attention so they don't messed up) and another part is bcuz Ashley has a somewhat guaranteed happy ending and Mildred is just trying to follow through that. If there's a happy ending that was guaranteed for Iris and Lily, I'm pretty sure that Mildred will just try to nudge them to that to.

She is not us, the readers, who see things from many perspective, she has not yet see the prince feeling hence she goes with the best choices from what she could actually see and that is following the 'guide' that was given and untill it was proven to her that her daughter could end up happier without following the book then why exactly is she going to go against that now.
