It's not like he sold her to be a prostitute, he assumed she wanted to be one (or more like needed to become one for whatever reason) and the main girl couldn't properly explain to the madam who was too forceful... That bag he put away was where he kept the watch, it wasn't a moneybag. And when taking her virginity, he was doing her a favour SHE ASKED FOR , even if his attraction towards her also may have been an ulterior motive. And asking her to forget - that was completely rational, since they weren't allowed to have a relationship, which brought a lot of complications.
