i feel like the firewood might be the reason they’re dying? like burning it releases a poison or something? maybe i’m reading in to it too much but i feel like it makes sense, lowk felt like foreshadowing when she bumped into the guy carrying the firewood

You're right, it's the firewood. The sport team from earlier broke a branch from the Dragon Tree (same one of their wands) and to hide the fact it wasn't a natural thing, they hide it with normal firewood believing nothing would happen. But something did happen.
Anyway, this is why they blame the first year's and why they need to look for a new place to train.
