I understand where a lot of people are coming from about Theo acting like a selfish brat etc etc. I just also think we should be more understanding of the situation. I feel like for her it’s not so much that she was okay with her brother being hit, it was more so that her brother was a safe haven who at least would protect her when even her mom and dad couldn’t. That’s why when he left to the military, she probably just felt betrayed and didn’t know what to do without her main support. I’m not excusing her behavior for being shitty, I’m just saying we shouldn’t immediately write off a characters because there’s a lot of emotional abuse that should also be taken account for in theo’s situation. Also if we really wanted hate on characters , hate the father for putting his son and daughter in these dispositions. She’s literally just a high schooler who witnessed everyone leaving her,( relatively before middle school if she is in high school now) and with an abusive father on top of it.
I feel sorry for them both. What Theo doesn't understand is that Craig was carrying burdens she was not--all the burdens: working, studying, protecting her, paying debts, taking the beatings. Everything was on him. The boy kinda broke to save his life, I think. If he had stayed he'd have murdered the dad or killed himself..and then where would Theo be? Alone, no brother, orphan. At least she still has a brother who loves her and is willing to bust his butt and give up his dreams for her (which is what he had done, paid for her school, paid debts, risked his life with loan sharks.)
I want them both happy and safe, and I hope Theo comes to appreciate her own brother's trauma. He had NO ONE to protect him, not even Theo protected him in any way. He was utterly alone in bearing those burdens. Until Theo was alone--and she didn't have to work to pay the bills like Craig. She only got one thing Craig got: the beatings. She didn't work, pay the bills, put off the loan sharks. She still doesn't know the full weight of what Craig felt. Only part.
