What makes her shine tho? Like what qualities about her stands out for him to be so obsessed with her I never understood. She seems like an average Joe to me so this whole story confuses me

I think it was how she stayed so tough and preserved through the hard times which made her “shine” to him in her eyes.
He probably just really love watching her struggle. If my memory is right, when he first got involved with her when she had troubles at the school, he was constantly sabotaging her while also being supportive on the surface. My memory could be mixed. But that's what I think i read. So I think he just finds her more "alive" when she is struggling to keep her head above the water.
He said she looks very fragile like a flower, as if even a small touch would destroy her, but that doesn't happen. Like she is a contradiction for him. In the ch he talks about how he felt like that from the first time you can see his exact words or it is in the chapter her brother leaves to his house.
