Guts can't be special because the theme is fighting fate and predetermination. I liked the idea where he just has a bad beginning like everything was pointing to a bad life and death. It is Guts himself that decides to find good even when the world tells him he cant and bad is all around him. But this chapter left it as it was predetermined and guts is the chosen one from some mystical point of view.
It is definitely defeating to think that Guts is an “exception” when his whole appeal was he was just human and his willpower was strong despite all odds. BUT I don’t think this chapter was saying that— i think it’s a glimpse of hope that Guts can stand a chance. Essentially saying Guts achieved humanity through his preservation and that’s something Griffith can never have. The question we open with at the beginning of Berserk makes us question if Guts life is predetermined, but this tells us it’s not. Every other human has a fate but Guts and Skull Knight mentioned his ungodly half. So now that he’s obtained both a physical and astral state, he’s basically understanding himself and in turn he can defeat Griffith just like when he left the Hawks.
