hi :) I already posted a comment explaining this but I'll say it here: in the novel it's explained that Elgy's current "mother" is not her real mom, but an impostor who took her place with the help of Elgy's father. It happened because Osis (previous emperor and Sovieshu's father) had a concubine named Alysia who he favored a lot but was hated by Sovieshu who was always on his mother's (the empress) side. One night she overhears little Sovieshu promising his mother that when he becomes emperor he would punish all mistresses. She gets scared and begins acting hostile towards Sovieshu, even hinting at him that he could die young (presumably by her hand?). Meanwhile occured the story of the laced cookies that both Navier and Sovieshu ate when they were little. Those were made by Sovieshu's mother and were meant for Alysia to render her infertile so she wouldn't have Osis babies and make the situation worse. One time during a quarrel between Alysia and Sovieshu, she mocked him by saying that she would give him a little sibling. This was the drop that spilled the glass. Sovieshu went to his father and accused Alysia of giving him and Navier the infertility cookies that he himself had stolen from his mother. Long story short, Alysia gets dragged off her bed and kicked off the castle that very same night. When she goes back to her family home her parents are so ashamed of her they drug her and abandon her in the middle of the sea on a wooden plank (very Titanic style). She's taken by pirates where she works for them for 2 years and later took as prisoner by Duke Ergi's nation soldiers. Duke Ergi's father spots her in a crowd and decides to buy her freedom and take her home, telling her that his own wife (Ergi's mom) is sick and can't attend social events because of her illness, so she will have to pose as his wife "until his real wife gets better". Little Ergi doesn't know his father's intentions so he warmly welcomes Alysia, but later finds out and becomes hostile towards her. Alysia's act works well in events and she gains credibility by charming everyone. One night a horrible fire starts in the house (was it caused by Alysia?). Alysia ends up saving Ergi from the flames but gets severely burned on her face and back. Everyone, including Zemenzia family, little Heinrey and other distinguished guests staying there at that time, witness Ergi's "mother" heroic act saving "her son". After that, even when Ergi insisted on that woman not being his real mom, people pitied him an assumed it was the shock from the fire. His sick mother got confined in an old shack where only Elgy would visit and care for her, while his father would act as if she didn't exist. Even Alysia would act affectionate towards him and cry when Ergi pushed her away and called her a fake.
Ergi hated Sovieshu because in his eyes he caused all this chain of events, and takes revenge on him by encouraging Rashta to make bad choices and taking the Empire's port through her. He also hates Rashta because she is so simmilar to Alysia.

Ooooh thank you for explaining! So glad for this detailed summary, kinda weird it isnt part of the story as it is a major plot that pushes Ergi's current random ass stubborn narrative to plunge their kingdom to chaos

Well if they want to include this chunk of Ergi's backstory on the webtoon they are still on time, since all those things that I explained are told way ahead in the story compared to where the comic is rn. But they could still not do it, since many hints of it that in the novel were already said aren't present in the webtoon.

Part of me wants to jump to the end and part of me wants to just follow the story as it is now. Well maybe another cliffhanger might push me to, but for now its nice to have the option to frustrate myself if the manhua is not following the novel hahaha
