This is all my opinion so take what you will from this, although please hear me out.
A lot of how Dohyun acts is absolutely stemming from his childhood… he was in an orphanage and learned to read others expressions and actions. Learned how to behave to get others to like/trust him. He had to survive and earn the affection of the teachers there. He was labeled as a “troublemaker”.
When Wooyeons mother went to that orphanage, Dohyun “won her over” (basically she thought he was cheeky but liked him because he knew how to get what he wanted). He was 10. He became her “sponsored child”.
Then he manifested at 14 as a dominant alpha and needed to be hyper aware of his pheromones at all times so he wouldn’t cause trouble and get kicked out of the orphanage.
Wooyeons mother introduced a family to Dohyun who ended up adopting him. (The family also has a daughter younger than Dohyun, Jinah).
Dohyun believed in order to stay with his family he had to be the absolute perfect and model son. Que the “plastic Ken Barbie”
He had suppressed himself and his emotions for YEEEAAAARRRSSS before meeting Wooyeon. He had overheard his adopted parents say he’s a good kid but sometimes feels fake. From the novel ****Ever since he was a child, he had never been one to easily show his feelings. It was a habit shaped by his environment, and he never saw any need to fix it.*****
*(sorry but no wonder he has major unreadable and “sus” RBF)*
When he first meets Wooyeon he’s so taken aback that this innocent, sweet, baby boy is THAT woman’s son. He ends up in a bit of a “complex” because Wooyeons feelings for him are so obvious. He ends up looking forward to tutoring him because he gets a bit of “emotional reprieve” when he’s with Wooyeon. He feels good when he knows that Wooyeon trusts him, likes him, waits for him, confides in him. (Also why he couldn’t admit he was an alpha because Wooyeon said he hates them).
Yes this started out as the Chairwoman hiring Dohyun to look after Wooyeon and tutor him. She hired him because Wooyeon wouldn’t ever confide in her and she believed if anyone could win over Wooyeon, it would be Dohyun (girl girlbossed a little bit too close to the sun)
This is all my opinion but I believe that those “I can’t read his expressions” or “I don’t know what he’s thinking” in relation to Dohyun (at present) is Dohyun fighting within himself over the guilt of not being able to be fully truthful with Wooyeon.
In omega complex, we briefly see that Dohyun isn’t himself during the festival. Because he was seriously restless and couldn’t hide it after the chairwoman told him Wooyeon was alone and hated being alone. Minjeong (mommy) pretended she didn’t notice Dohyun acting off but he says he should go “Didn’t you say you have work?”
Dohyun RAN to Wooyeon. He, at this point, was already down bad (not sexually, but emotionally). He knew he did something wrong by not drawing a line with Wooyeon sooner, he knew he was only 16, too immature for romantic feelings, and someone who should never feel them. Dohyun had become special to someone and that made him happy and he didn’t know how to stop.
Novel ****** the one blinded by blind affection, might not have been Wooyeon, it might have been himself….. (skip)…. He thought he was the one taming him, but in reality, he was the one falling in.******
After Wooyeon confessed and Dohyun said he was going to the military, he also said something else that Wooyeon didn’t hear. “……I’m sorry” he apologized because he didn’t know how to avoid being addicted to that sweetness and it wasn’t just romance anymore, but he was restless and drunk on unfiltered affection, and he knew that he wouldn’t be able to escape it.
Going into the Dohyun POV within the novel. The breakup with Wooyeon was absolutely devastating to him. Wasn’t eating right, sleeping was bad. He loves Wooyeon and wanted to come clean to Wooyeon about the chairwoman hiring him to watch Wooyeon.
Dohyun had never once smiled fake to Wooyeon. He had always been sincere. His feelings were romantic, they were affection, fondness. By the time he realized it and tried to suppress those feelings, the chairwoman called to see him. Wooyeon got sick after he left. “They said it was a kind of lovesickness”. Everything she said after was knife after knife to him.
Dohyun was always there, always looking for him, always making sure Wooyeon was okay.
The Chairwoman ruined what they had but I won’t go into all that.
Bottom line is, even with what we’ve seen in the webtoon, you can see those micro movements. But you have to SEE them. They very easily can be missed.
Yes, Dohyun was keeping the fact he was hired by the chairwoman four years ago. *****But he is not working for her since*****. He even told the chairwoman that he was going to tell Wooyeon everything.
He wants to be good to Wooyeon. He knows how to draw hard lines between others. But that line has never been there for Wooyeon. He acts “sus” because he knows that Wooyeon knows exactly who he is (seongsaengnim) and he’s trying to “provok” Wooyeon into confessing he knows and isn’t hiding it.
I mean ffs when Dohyun was “yanking Wooyeons chain” he called him Yeon-ah when he reached his climax, bro really said fuck it. He wanted him.
He wanted Wooyeon to be his but he wanted him to be honest with him all whilst not being honest to Wooyeon or himself.
The way Dohyun acts is very easily explainable but it does take some thinking about. I think the novelist did a wonderful job of adding in the psychology of it all.
