Incase you’re confused with caron suggesting to tell their father and questioning “they had a father?” in the beginning of the story, she mentions he was sent to the front lines to stay busy. the step mother then could take better control of the house and keep the abuse better hidden
i honestly don't know how ppl missed it since she said multiple times throughout that she never felt like she could tell her father bc it would just make things worse for her
