Well, I'd say it's very typical for the whole Japanese society. On the one hand everyone is right when saying that there are very few really corpulent people and gaining weight is generally undesirable. I must have been around ten at that time. We were just curious what it meant and wasn't in love with each other at all. So it ended up being really strange, kind of embarrassing and not really pleasant at all. Well, it wasn't that unpleasant either. My first 'real' kiss was much, much later. Don't remember exactly.
