He never had a girlfriend for the ring. He bought it solely for protection to ward off unwanted advances by women. I'd like to think that when he bought it he had Myeong in mind and the one that bound his heart was always Myeong. Hence it was always Myeong's ring which is why he put it on his finger at the end. Well that's just what I would like to think.

That's my first understanding as well even beforewatching the animation. So I only learned from the animation that its just for looks. But if I havent watched it, i would 100% conclude that it is PURPOSELY for myeong. ヾ(☆▽☆)
