Imma be honest here, the only reason Mai and Maki are alive and well is because they are women. Although the Zenin clan is misogynistic as fucc, they see Mai and Maki as those who can marry into rich and powerful families to form alliances. This is only proven further while we see that Toji had left the clan too and had gotten a scar from being in the clan because he didn't have any cursed energy.
