Just recently moved to this website from Mangarock and started by re-reading this beautiful manga again. This is just sooo well-done.
I have a problem with the majority of Yuri I come across: Unlike Yaoi, which usually has fully fleshed out and interesting characters that you are actively rooting for, most yuri I have read are basically pure fanservice. All the characters are 2 dimensional, overly cutesy people with no ulterior motives in the story. Also, the stories themselves are basically a bunch of one shots in which the first two or so chapters are about the two protagonists getting together and the rest is just fluff with no story. They get really boring really quick and you never really get invested in the characters. In other words, you only see them AS characters and nothing else.
However, this yuri manga, along with a few more (Pulse, Citrus, Blooming sequence; to name my favs) does one, single thing that completely changes everything that is bad about the majority of yuris: IT TAKES ITSELF SERIOUSLY. Because it sees itself not as a way of grabbing money quick but as a way of telling a heartfelt story, it gets so many things right. The characters are actually fully fleshed out and 3 dimensional people that you are emotionally attached to, the setting is believable, the art is beautiful, and to top it all off, WHAT A STORY! Every little thing each chapter adds to the story is so well thought out and meaningful and just compliments the characters and scenario perfectly. Nothing here is rushed and everyone gets 'screen time' and character development. Oh yea and the character development was masterful; not gonna go too deep into that as this is spoiler free (^-^).
This manga does one more thing right, and it's one of the most important, if not THE most important part of any manga/anime; and that's the sendoff. The final farewell to the characters you've been following through the story.
A story can be ruined by its sendoff, like for example Guilty Crown, specifically the anime. For me, I felt like i didn't even know what was going on in the ending of that show and then all of a sudden BOOM, Shu is blind now. It ruined it for me. This is the complete opposite for shows like 'Angel Beats!', which absolutely perfected its sendoff. The ending to that show changed it from an 8/10 to a 9.5/10. And don't even get me started on Your Lie in April. 10/10 Jesus Christ I was s o b b i n g.
This manga had one of those final moments that just makes a little tear of happiness creep into your eye as you read it. Truly brilliant writing and the use of coulor at the end, my heart melted.
Anyway, I've gone on far too long about this manga, so read it, please. I beg you. You won't regret it. ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶
