It feels like there must be some plot twist. Maybe something supernatural like him being immortal, maybe at the end of the day he was not really dying in the last chapter, but just being cunning and tricking? I'm not sure but I feel like there's a reason for his opinions about life and death being so different and extreme.
It's just my take, who knows what author will do with this twist, we'll see
