Really? I'll admit that I haven't read many Yaoi (about 5 completed and 15 ongoing then the ones my friend talks about), but they always have the male lead with his guy best friend- yet the guy bsf is never a rival or rude.
I mean sometimes the male lead will have a bag buh for the most part they don't and they always introduce a third dude to be a love rival just for a conflict starter.

i think that’s what makes it more realistic although it’s extremely annoying. they both have different fears and trauma that they haven’t healed from, it’s a slow burn, we’re eventually see the development.
