I think some of you been wondering bout this but for those that are curious about Riftan’s POV (beware spoiler)

He has a painful, sad & very hurt life. He’s always got scolded, humiliated & his life is all painful. Riftan lives in a small hut with his mother & stepfather. He met Maxi when he was 12 y.o (that time, Maxi was 6 y.o so both are 6 years differences). As a child, Riftan worked in one of the blacksmiths. He always watched Maxi picking up stones in the courtyard of Croix Castle. There was a time when Maxi was attacked by a monster in the forest & he saved Maxi right then & there. There was a time when Riftan saw his mother commit suicide, he then ran away & started his new life.

He then enlisted as a mercenary to kill monsters & here Riftan met Ruth. When he went to an area, Riftan was always despised, abused, ostracized, & even he was being called "Southern Dog" because he was an illegitimate child & had mixed blood from the south. This is what causes him to always being grumpy & easily quick to anger. It’s because he's always looked down upon.

When Riftan is injured from being attacked by a monster, Ruth tries to heal him but Riftan can't stand the pain then Ruth gives him the “illusion magic" & Ruth orders Riftan to think about happy & fun things but instead, Riftan laughs silly realize that no happiness is happen in his life + his body is deteriorating due to pain. Then at that very moment, Riftan remembered Maxi. He remembered the time he saved maxi in the forest. Slowly, the illusion magic Ruth used worked & Riftan finally recovered from his wounds. At that moment, Riftan’s form of happiness is Maxi.

One day, Riftan & Ruth went to an area. Riftan froze realize there was a Croix Castle flag. He thinks that Maxi is on the train but sadly Maxi is nowhere to be found & he’s disappointed. When Riftan is already a knight, the knights visited Duke Croix's castle. This is the second time Riftan meets Maxi, and falls in love with her. Every time he sees her, his heart beats, his mind goes blank, all his nerves are on her. Riftan always dreamed of her. He often dresses well just to get her attention and wants to talk to her.

There was a time when Riftan follows Maxi secretly into the forest & that’s where he found out about her always stuttering. Riftan actually really hates women but not for Maxi. Riftan has always love her & she’s always in his heart. Maxi is the only woman for him. There was a time when Riftan dance with another girl, the girl then suddenly kiss him. At that time, Maxi met him & she stared at him with his face filled with kisses (this appeared in the manhwa). In his eyes, Maxi is a beautiful charming woman with white skin, smooth beautiful hair, & her eyes are like lake in spring.

A strange foreign man came to Riftan & the foreign man said that he would be engaged to one of the Princesses of Duke Croix. His heart broke to hear that. He was afraid that the stranger would be engaged to Maxi. Because there is an order from King Ruben regarding the dragon that is hibernating, Riftan went to Duke Croix to report the matter & this is where Riftan finds out Maxi is not engaged. He’s happy about it. Because the dragon has woken up from hibernation, King Ruben ordered the Duke to be in charge of the dragon's expedition. Duke then took advantage of this by making an offer to Riftan. The offer is that Riftan can marry Maxi. But he had to go on a dragon expedition. He turned down the offer as he always thought that Maxi could find a better noble and honorable man than him. Duke finally imprisoned Riftan's stepfather. If Riftan wants to get his stepfather out of prison, then Riftan must accept his offer. When marriage with Maxi, Riftan cursed everyone in Croix castle but when Riftan see Maxi dressed in a white bride, the curse stopped. his breath stopped when he was beside Maxi.

After the wedding, Maxi & Riftan went to the room for their first night as a married couple. Riftan is so happy because the girl he's been dreaming of since then has now come true. He’s happy that Maxi is in his arms. He was disgusted with other women except for beloved Maxi even he loves smex time with her. In the morning, Riftan went on a dragon expedition with his men. It was during this expedition that Riftan met Agnes.

Several years of dragon expedition, Riftan and his men are attacked by monster Golem. Riftan was seriously injured and had to be treated with "illusion magic". He then had a nightmare about his mother hanging herself on the roof of the house. His mother's face was black and dangling & His mother’s hair hung horribly. Riftan hit his head & he was really scared by the dream. It was a nightmare that always came to him. He ran as far as he could, but his mother's body seemed to cling to him then something red approached him. Riftan is shocked to see the woman he loves, Maxi standing in front of him. Maxi reached her hand to Riftan's cheek. Then she kissed his lips.

Fear, fatigue, sadness & worry disappeared from him instantly when he saw Maxi. If you look deep into his heart, Maxi will always be there. She has always been the beauty in Riftan's life. Maxi is the only bright light in Riftan's life and then, he determined to come back alive from the dragon expedition. He wants to go back to Maxi. He wants to live with Maxi as he finished the dragon expedition quickly.

She met Riftan when she was 6 y.o. When she was 8 y.o she was tortured by her father in a special room. She was beaten until she was injured & bleeding. She was whipped, verbally abused, humiliated & yelled at.

Maxi's father always called her "Stuttering horse, stupid child, stupid sheep, shy mouse, useless & failed child". But the most painful word is "You'd better never be born in this world, you'd rather die with your mother". Because her father beat her too often, she’s afraid of other people, including Riftan. She is afraid of men & she is very traumatized by anything. When Riftan brought her to Anatol, Riftan cares deeply for Maxi. He loves her & wants to protect her with all his heart.

War 1, Maxi secretly disguises herself as a priestess to follow Riftan to war. Maxi is attack by Trolls then she was injured. Two of her ribs were broken. Her shoulder was badly bruise & she was bleeding. Maxi also has miscarriage. Knowing she was injured, Riftan told her to go with Agnes so that she would be protect.

Maxi lives in Drakium. Duke Croix brought her back to Croix castle & This is where Maxi found out she miscarried. Maxi lives in the Croix castle again & Riftan wanted to see her, but Duke Croix wouldn't let them meet. Then Maxi was whipped until she bled bloods everywhere by Duke Croix & this is the moment where Riftan seen her whipping incident. Seeing such that thing happen to Maxi, Riftan's blood boiled high & he is is very damn angry about it. Riftan beat Duke Croix up & kicking Duke Croix almost to death. Duke Croix was seriously injured. Then Maxi is treated by Ruth with magic. Riftan takes maxi to an inn & treats her wound. Then they talk to each other deeply about it.

He asked how often did it happen. She tried to avoid his gaze & looked around bewildered. He stayed silent so that it would force her to answer under pressure. She tried to make light of it & make excuses so she could keep her last remaining spec of pride. For her, being abused is shameful. He asked when did the duke do this to her. She tried to avoid it again but she just couldn't. She answered since she was 8 y.o that she was abused. She stuttered after it became clear. Twice a week she had to read a poem in front of her father. If she didn’t do well, her father abused & punished her. She said that desperately.

Riftan didn’t intend to take her back to Anatol because it would be better for her to stay at Croix Castle. If she wants, he would have let them keep her. He kept repeating to himself over & over again. He wants to go back to Croix Castle just to check her condition to make sure she’s well & healthy. He just wants to see her once then he will go back & this time he won’t force her to come with him like last time. His voice’s trembling & unstable at this point. He asked the Duke to let him sees her just once but the Duke said that she didn’t want to see Riftan’s face. He feels like the world is collapsing underneath his feet. She never said what the Duke said to Riftan. She never said she didn’t want to see Riftan. He asked why did she follow the Duke’s order & asked wouldn’t it be better to wait for him. Rather than being with Riftan, was it better for her to be with person like the Duke. She thought Riftan didn’t want to see her again. She thought both would have child together but she got miscarriage. She lost it. He asked she thought he wouldn’t want to see her. She said what else could she think of when he told her to leave & said nothing else. He yelled at her that he didn’t want to see her get hurt anymore.

He then shouted "Since I took you to Anatol, you have been in danger many times. When I saw your body filled with blood & wound, I thought it was all my fault! Why should you go through this? The thing that made you pregnant, that made you chase after such a scum! It's all me!”. She was speechless. He continued "I should have left you alone. I shouldn't have taken you to Anatol. I knew from the beginning that you didn't want to marry me at all. If I really loved you, I should have let you go when I came back the first time. I thought that it would have been better for you if I didn't come back alive. While you were unconscious. I only thought that.” He started to shake as he tries to suppress his tears but he still kept on going. "If it wasn't for your sister, I would have left you here! Why didn't you tell me what t he has been doing to you? Why didn't you tell me? Why? If you had told me about it, he wouldn't be able to come near you. No matter what, I'd protect you at any cost. Why didn't you let me know? Why?"

She started rambling & wept bitterly. She cries because of her lie pretending to be a honorable noblewoman has been discovered by him. She didn't want him to think of her as less she didn't want him to know how she has lived far worse than an animal when he thought of her as a spoiled & respectable honorable young lady of a Duke's but instead she was just a lowly woman who had nothing. She said “I..I'm nothing. I’m nothing. I'm scared that you will know. Even if I die, I didn't want to tell you. I..I don't want to let you know. You know, I'm nobody" She started crying when he hugged her. He looked at her. He’s been thinking of her for so long. He then add "I've been thinking about you for a long time. Even when you didn't know that such a man like me exist in this world. You were the only one for me. The more I hope for you, the more vain & miserable I became, but I just couldn't stop. I thought about it many times, many times. Let's stop now. The more I thought of you, the more lonely I became. No matter who I became, I was alone. Let's stop today. Let’s stop chasing someone you can’t reach. When I wake up, I always think of you. I was always chasing you. I don’t think your heart was mine. Since meeting you, my heart hasn't been mine. so how could you be nothing? How could you be nothing?" After the big deep talk, They both hugged each other & cried in silence.
