I think na-in and the boss knew each other/ were together in a past life, and it probably ended with na-in dying and the boss being heartbroken, which is why in this life the boss always maintains some sort of distance from him so he doesn’t get so attached and devastated when na-in dies again (even though he obviously likes na-in) ╥﹏╥
