Well it isn't monstrous traits, it was the environment he grew up in. He wanted to be just like his father, and although he has the expertise to lead in a country, he wants a picture perfect rule like if his father had been on the throne. He wants to be like his father, conquering lands and gaining more power, and Yona basically said it in front of God and everybody.
