In this world technically no. Since the princess can also be a crow princess. They are just being dicks. The duchess was originally supposed to be empress
gender still plays a huge role in everything. a male patriarchy is still very dominant to them, although not as much of a taboo as it seems. this is depicted when the princes killed each other to get the throne. the deaths of all the males meant she was next in line. but because she stepped down, her half brother (we assume one of his parents was not the reigning emperor/empress) became the current emperor. thus we can conclude that legitimacy >>> gender. but males will still automatically be the heirs. to the emperor, there is still a threat to his seat on the throne so not having a son is an open invite to lets say damian (who's technically a prince) or even mikhail (heir to a dukedom) to be in line for the throne.

Correct my point exactly. They do prefer the duchess. And though one could argue that yes, a prince would been preferable for better standing against the Duchess' son or the duchess her self because sexism. But a princess is okay none the less because again if the Duchess' son is a threat.. who comes from the former princess' lineage. That means that baby princess has alot of legitimacy as well.
