I think it's a mixture of both? Along with the presumed heir lessons that made him mature faster but still with a semi child like mentality, and that we even got to see that his mother didn't hide the fact that she tormented his sister, that he was able to tell it was wrong, and felt bad for them treating her that way. And probably to the point that back then, family was EVERYTHING, so a mixture of all of those things loss of parents, and his kinda lack of emotions from what we have seen so far, I think he's latching onto her as she's all he has left
