I mean I feel like he was always intended to be a bad person considering the first time he was mentioned they were already describing him as overly protective and you can see how restricted the mc acts because of this. The mc is being treated like a pre schooler incapable of thinking and protecting himself despite already being a 20 year old... So yeah the childhood friend is already a red flag from the very beginning its just complicated by their past history but doesn't mean his any less controlling
