Its both of them. ML didn't believe in the name verse soul mate thing and was trying to see if MC would love him without the knowledge of the name. MC did love ML but didn't want to be a placemat until the "real" name verse partner arrived. Its something like a miscommunication, but I dont feel like thats right.
