Wow, I knew I made the right call sticking out on this. I think the author did a great job of showing sympathetic view how desperation can lead to inhumane and illogical actions, while not making you entirely root for the town. I know some people are saying that he was "blabbering nonesense", but to me that added to the tension because his "incoherent" rambling made his fear feel more real. That being said he could just be lying too idk ╮(￣▽￣)╭. The themes of morality presented remind lot of the road by Cormac McCarthy and station eleven.

I feel that the teach definitely had a violent past before the head trauma and is an unreliable narrator. His initial extreme reactions to violence feels like the images are triggering his memories, but he recovers from them way too fast for it to be a complete aversion. He is living in his truth and only his truth.
