When i was young, reading this made me dislike Eleanor and her older sister. But now that I'm a lot older, understanding women's position in society and the struggles in these era, I understand them and feel for Eleanor, even her older sister. The older sister was too blunt and strong, but considering the pressure i get why she's like that, "men are like that" "i hate it when people say that", she strongly oppose to women oppression in that era that's why she's the way she is. As for Eleanor, she's the submissive women in that era, the ones often became victims of the oppression and she struggles not only internally but also by the judgement the society placed on her, i feel so sorry for her I can't help feel a little angry at William.
Yes love conquer all, but you can't be so reckless and hurt other people's feelings like he did, he entered their relationship knowing she loves him and he wasn't ready to open his heart for another, he was still so strongly in love with someone else. Sure he sees no way out at the time, but as a man he's let off easily unlike women whose engagement was called off, he didn't think it through. If only he wasn't so pressed by his father, by his status, by his brokenheart, and if only he didn't see Eleanor's feelings as an alternative, he wouldn't do what he's not supposed to do. If only he was steadfast with his feelings, honest with his feelings and tell Eleanor as such when she confessed to him, she would still be hurt but not as much as after he given her hope for marriage. At least I'm relieved that Eleanor seemed to find a better man for her, i hope she'll find more happiness. (I get that neither her or William will be happy if they did get married because of their imbalanced love for another, but it would've been better if William didn't start anything from the beginning. When someone made a choice, they should be resolved of the consequences of their choices!) not that i don't understand William, he too was momentarily lost, it's a complex feeling, i support him with Emma yet at the same time i can't help thinking, "you shouldn't do that bro, don't do that to an innocent woman "

Probably in real life William would have married Eleanor, so this kinda feel like a fairy tale to me. I am happy that Eleanor also found happiness in this story, because she is a real sweetheart and became an indirect collateral damage of society's expectation at that time. Reading this makes me realise that we are so fortunate to be living in current times, it just feels like so restrictive in the past, whether one is a noble or someone poor.
