this hits close to home. definitely, sumida is sick and the monster is its symbol. it's just so bleak how he chased for normalcy (and later, atonement) while trying to ignore the "monster" that was constantly there, and how, even with people caring for him, it never seems to go away. sumida's desperation peeking through his anger and violence was such a nice element, along with how he was trying to "rationalize" all of his course of action. this is a pretty accurate as to how depression works because unless you get treated, there's no cure, no matter what you do to cope. sumida knows how it will end and the last chapter says this: "... it's already been decided."
this is pretty short but i really liked it. what broke me was when sumida came to terms with his helplessness and came back home to see the people who cared for him repairing his home. it wasn't only the house that they were trying to repair but sumida himself, although, of course, this was not enough to help him. "i came back here to die... please... go home, everyone."
I’m 100% that the Monster we see throughout the manga is supposed to be Sumida‘s depression and hopelessness. Pretty sure it’s even there before he kills his Dad? Which would show that he was always depressed considering his family situation. Later on, when his friends give him hope and encouragement to start a better life and turn himself in, he still proceeds to kill himself in the following night. That scene where he admitted that he still had things to do and presumably didn’t necessarily want to die, and then goes to consult the monster, which then tells him that „it was already decided“ is just too sad. Even if people give you hope, depression will always make you feel as if you don’t deserve redemption and happiness. The violent portrayal of sexuality, the rape, shouzo(?) being forced to lose his virginity and that homeless guy, who turned out to be a pervert, really stood out to me. In a way, I think this is the authors way of critiquing that kids and teenagers are often forced to grow up quickly, but I feel like there’s something else I haven’t grasped yet? Maybe how japans society is dismissive of things like sexual assault and stuff?
Oh God . The ending was too damn depressing . Now I can't get it out of my head ╥﹏╥ Chizawa was such an angel . Everyone needs someone like her in their life. If that officer did his job right I believe they would have a happy life . The thing that I keep thinking about is that they were really mature for their age. I mean they were in middle school and discussed about some serious philosophical shit (⊙…⊙ ) In the end if you want something realistic and dark this is perfect for you .
Tbh in the last chapter when the policeman appeared, I thought he would consider maybe becoming a police officer. With his strong desire to "catch bad guys", wouldn't that be a suitable goal to aspire towards? But I guess the story has to be depressing to the very end huh.
You're right this would've been an amazing ending but as many people told him , he was mentally sick . If he got the help he needed he could become anything he put his mind into.
